With the advancement of technology, the scale and design of computer systems have undergone tremendous changes. Today's industrial embedded computers are hardly like desktop computers. But perhaps more importantly, the way the industry uses computers has evolved to include applications that seemed impossible long ago. But what exactly is an "embedded computer", and how does its form and performance differ from the consumer-grade desktop computers that currently exist in homes and offices?

Embedded computer systems have many names (computer boxes, industrial computers, controllers, industrial computers, etc.), but an embedded PC is basically any special-purpose computer system, which is implemented as a part of large equipment, intelligent system or installation. Embedded computers vary in shape and size, from tiny ARM-based devices that power today's smartphones to integrated solutions that run large bulldozers and equipment. Embedded computers are also playing a key role in the evolving Internet of Things, realizing the connection between machines, people, places, the Internet of Things and the cloud.

What is a home computer?


Another term we often use to define our product line is desktop computers. Many of our customers are using our system to complete a very specific task or operation. Creating a dedicated device to accomplish one thing requires highly customizable, ultra-reliable hardware that can be configured according to the exact requirements of a given application. The device computer itself has many of the same functions as the embedded industrial computer (dedicated I/O, fanless and non-porous chassis, small form factor), but the device PC is not designed for other devices, but designed for independent operation.


What is an embedded computer?


When we talk about an "embedded computer", we are referring to a standalone computer that is used as part of any large system. Our embedded computers can be used as data acquisition devices in solar arrays and navigation devices on NASA planetary probes, as well as the brains behind complex digital signage displays and modern interactive kiosks.


What is the difference between an embedded computer and a desktop computer?


Embedded computers are easy to define by how they are used, but there are some key functions that make embedded computers an important part of modern system design.


Small form factor: One of the outstanding features of almost all embedded computers is their size. Usually built around Mini-ITX, Intel's NUC and other small motherboards, and BeagleBone Black and other small single-board devices. Solid-state storage and flexible mounting options also allow embedded computers to be used in almost any position or orientation.


Low maintenance: In many cases, embedded computers, as the name suggests, go deep into complex systems, making reliability very important. Industrial computers are designed to provide 24-hour uninterrupted operation, usually with a well-designed, fanless and non-porous enclosure designed to effectively dissipate heat while protecting internal components from environmental damage, including dust and air debris, extreme temperatures, humidity, and vibration .


Efficient cooling: Consumer-grade computer systems use fans to help circulate air on the components and keep them cool. In an embedded system, the fan creates a potential failure point and needs to be opened in the case to allow air to enter and exhaust. Although some embedded PCs still use fans, advancements in passive cooling have enabled many industrial PCs to maintain a seal with components while still effectively dissipating heat without the need for fans. Removing the fan can reduce the failure rate, eliminate noise and provide more space for the overall assembly.
